Right wing “values voters” use racist images of Obama to sell Obama Waffles

Right wing values voters bought and sold Obama Waffles at their convention.

If I didn’t read it in the news FIRST before seeing it on YouTube I wouldn’t have believed it.  Samantha Chang reports, Obama Waffles: Racial Stereotypes as Propaganda:

You know Republicans are shaking in their cowboy boots when they resort to racial stereotyping as a way to undermine Barack Obama.

Activists at a conservative political summit held in Washington, D.C., Sept. 13 were buying up box loads of Obama Waffles, a waffle mix showing Obama on the front with bulging eyes and big lips as he smiles at a plate of waffles. On its top flap, Obama sports what appears to be a white turban next to the words: “Point box toward Mecca for tastier waffles.”

Mark Whitlock and Bob DeMoss, who created Obama Waffles, insist they meant no harm, saying their drawings were merely political satire. The two writers from Franklin, Tenn., sold Obama Waffles for $10 a box from a rented booth at the Values Voter Summit sponsored by the lobbying arm of the Family Research Council. The vendors were later booted from the forum after protesters found the waffle box offensive.

Republicans Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney spoke at the forum, which reportedly drew 2,100 participants from 44 states. Obama Waffles invokes the demeaning stereotype of the iconic pancake-mix caricature, Aunt Jemima, which has been widely criticized as offensive to African-Americans. Placing Obama in a turban plays into the false rumor that he is Muslim, when in fact he’s Christian.

On the back of the box, Obama is shown wearing a sombrero and Mexican clothing above a recipe for Open-Border Fiesta Waffles that says it can serve “4 or more illegal aliens.” Included with the recipe are the words: “While waiting for these zesty treats to invade your home, why not learn a foreign language?”

The conservative public policy groups American Values and Focus on the Family Action co-sponsored the event.

Apparently these right wing “values voters” allowed the sale of Obama Waffles (and bought TONS of boxes of Obama Waffles) at their “Values Voter Summit” for THREE DAYS before stopping the sale of Obama Waffles because protesters of the summit were complaining about the racist content on the boxes.  Here’s a conversation with the two “values voters” that created the racist product:

The message could have been put across without the pictures if what they really wanted to focus on was his “waffling” positions. I think it shows how childish and cruel people are being that they would print those pictures and write those comments about mecca, the illegal aliens and of course the ridiculous idea that any of us would or should learn another language.
If it wasn’t racist then it was stupid either way someone should have caught it! You mean a comment about lipstick is sexist but this caricature isn’t racist? I am continually confused

Ari, if you cannot see the problem, then obviously you are the problem. Get your head out of your tail.

This is clearly racist. And what scares me is that these are the people who are speaking up for conservative “Christian Values.” Well if these are the types of “values” that you’re teaching your children then its no wonder Amerikkka is as screwed up as it is.

Wow, what the hell were they thinking? And yes, these images are racist and not just charicatures. The charicature plays off a sort of “Aunt Jemima” stereotype of simple black servants and the turban invokes the false rumor that Barack is muslim.

At this rate, the McCain supporters might just succeed in taking down their own candidate. With stuff like this and McCain’s almost universally decried ads, the Repubs just might end up giving the election to the dems after all. But I’m still worried. On my new blog, I’ve posted about some mistakes I think barack’s people have made and what should be done to remedy them. check it out: http://www.anotherwhitefemaleforbarack.blogspot.com

Ari, you need to read up on American history in the early to mid 20th century in regards to African Americans and the racist images white people created of them. You’ll then see the likeness to the images of Obama on the waffle box. Also, I agree with Jackie. They’re perpetuating the muslim lie. That in itself shows their real intentions.

These bozos were already walking a thin line with the political caricatures, but by perpetuting the muslim lie, they revealed their real motives which are dirty and underhanded. And you just know they have a version of that same box at home that’s much, much worse. The Republican Party has dragged our political process into the gutter and our Founding Fathers are turning in their graves.

I’m not seeing the racist element here. Rather, I see a caricature of Obama. Remember the Jimmy Carter caricatures? If we go nuts every time we get offended by something that may or may not be there, we’ll turn off the average voter.

    “Values Voters”?

If this isn’t racist, I don’t know what is.
Where does all this hate come from? Are we really such a backward society as this?

    It appears so.

Wow disturbing. Some will do anything to play on people’s fears and prejudices.
